On Getting Older

Taking another look at the pictures from the book signing, the fact that I'm 40 finally sinks in. I have the paunch, though not as big as it was over a year ago. (Still managing to keep the 20 lbs. at bay, but unable to lose another 10.) And trying to get any kind of muscle mass or even muscle tone is like a neverending battle forcing me onto the losing side. The wrinkles are popping up more frequently, as are other skin issues which tend to run long and deep in my family. But the worst part is noticing how my hair is thinning. From the front, the change doesn't make itself apparent, yet when hunching over to sign a book, the thinness glares at me. My hairline is following along with that of my Dad's. Perhaps I should cut my losses and cut my hair similar to Dad's: close cropped to the scalp. Not a full buzz cut, more of a fuzz cut. I just don't know that my head offers the right shape. Or if I would look acceptable without the hair "to which I have become accustomed".

Ugh, the things we go through for beauty.

Paunch. What a word. We must have twins....because I have one too.

It was about 10 years or so ago now that I came to grips with just how thin my hair was. I lived in denial for years. So I tried a buzz or a fuzz. Then I said to myself, "Self! to hell with it! Shave it all off!" And so I have for lo these many years. A few weeks ago I thought about letting it grow in and maybe do one of those old geezer ponytails. That lasted less than a week and I ran for my razor begging forgiveness. ;)

I've always been attracted to mature men. I used to say "older men" but that's no longer accurate. Sometimes they're younger now. I can relate Greg, and I have to add you're looking good for a 40-something GWM. :)

Welcome to the Club! It's not so bad. We have a lot of members. And I agree with you. When the hair starts to thin, keep it short.
Oh, and ah, cheer up.

Answer: you are no longer a member of it !

Welcome to the middle ages. As I leave my 40s, let me tell you it needs vigilence. or it will go to pot quickly.
Watch your diet and get some exercise!

Greg -
I completely understand. I turned 40 last year; unfortunately, some of the less savory aspects of aging started to encroach on me by my late 30s...

I commpletely agree with your take on personal vanities.

I love my 40s! I've never felt better about myself and cared less about what others think of me.

As far as personal vanity goes, we never see ourselves accurately, so why bother? I do believe in eating healthy with time off to indulge one day of the weekend, as well as exercise. My rule, however, is that I do it because I feel better when I do it, not to make me look better.
