Family Values?
If you look through my blog archives, I doubt you will find any posts of a political nature. I have my opinions but rarely discuss them because so many others have already said what I feel...and have said it much better than I ever could.
But two things struck me as odd after listening to Governor Palin's speech last night. (Okay, many things she said last night were bothersome and coupled with the fact that the conventioneers ate everything up like pablum and that I remember seeing very few people of color -- Black, Asian, Hispanic, Latino, Native American, etc. -- in the crowd, well I could go on, but that's not what this post is about.) First, Governor Palin supports abstinence-only education -- I think. I've found quite a few articles on-line written within the past few days regarding a gubernatorial questionnaire from 2006 but can't find anything about her actual stance. If she's advocating abstinence-only, then doesn't her 17-year-old, unwed daughter's pregnancy and Gov. Palin's subsequent "change of heart" to say that the pregnancy is okay because she's keeping the baby and marrying the young father, provide a glaring display of hypocrisy? How can Gov. Palin tout that the abstinence programs work when her own family visibly disproves that?
Second, I'm actually glad she said that if elected as Vice President, that parents of special needs children would have a voice in the White House. However, a 5-month old child living with Down Syndrome requires much love, care and attention. Will Gov. Palin be able to balance the possible Vice Presidency and the country's affairs with the needs of her child? I know I'm going to get slammed for saying this, but wouldn't the child come first? Shouldn't the child come first?
To answer in my own way any who will say, "Why are you even talking about her family? That doesn't have anything to do with her ability to govern. Stick to her stances on the real issues," (or something like that), these are real issues. These actions show how she handles difficult situations, and should she become Vice President, those issues will increase in both number and difficulty. And with her being such an unknown political quantity to most of the country, I don't see how the above-mentioned issues can be ignored.
(And if the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate or even former President Clinton and his family were in similar situations, the GOP would be all over it, muckraking, loosing the hounds and trying to beat the Democrats to a bloody pulp with it.)

I think it was John Stewart (of the Daily Show) that recently had side by side clips of Palin's current statements/positions on many issues vis-a-vis her criticisms of others (mainly Hillary) just months ago. It is very instructive to see how her rhetoric has changed now that the shoe is on the other foot. You only need to see these clips to see her glaring hypocrisy.
Taking your thoughts a step further...
How about dragging this poor infant off to the convention and bouncing him from relative to relative while each family member took a bow? And the bright lights?? And all that yelling and screaming??
Very thoughtful. No doubt in the infant's best interest??
Also, hands off the children, but here's my pregnant child and her boyfriend, also a child ..... You may photograph them and celebrate their wise choices... But, if you criticize them, you are EVIL....
You know, I've been the SAME exact thing about Palin and her baby... and her soon-to-be grandchild. Priorities will shift and then what? If she focuses too much on her Veep job, then she becomes a bad mother to a retarded child. If she focuses on the baby, then she becomes a nonexistent VP (ummm, Cheney anyone?).
The demands of motherhood are a wee bit stronger than some people understand. And one friend said, "But Carter had a child when he was President and JFK did too", but the difference is, she's a mother and they were fathers. While I agree that parenting is both parents' responsibilities, back then, the traditional role kept the kids with the First Lady, no with the President, so when he was busy, he could focus. Maternal instinct is far stronger than that. If her baby is in trouble and there's a world crisis at hand, it becomes a Sophie's Choice.
IMHO, the GOP has shown once again that exploitation is their best resource, whether it be a war, a teen pregnancy, or a disabled infant.
Thanks for this post, Senor. I was boiling and thinking of writing a similar post, but now I can direct people to yours. Well said.
Oh, and since they brought these thorny issues into the open themselves, I say they're fair game to everyone.
Amen! It was the first thing that came to mind when they said the children were off limits. The Republican party represents, "family values," abstinence, and the fundamentals of marriage; all of which Palin child raising failed to live up to. And you said it right; it's a hypocrisy.
alas, people believe what they want to believe; i've actually had a patient blame the democrats on their views of sex ed for the kid's pregnancy!!
You know, my heart goes out to Levi Johnston. A few weeks ago, his life was carefree, only concerned with playing hockey and getting laid. BAM! Now he's getting married and in the spotlight.
Well, Palin may be abstinence only, but her daughter's pregnant now, so the best pro-life thing to do is have the baby. My guess is that there has been a tremendous amount of pressure put on the kids to get married, which is not necessarily the best thing. It might be better for the child and the soon-to-be-wed couple to put the baby on eBay.
As far as dragging her own baby out to the RNC, I'm not convinced it would have been different if she were a Democrat.
From what I've read, it sounds like Palin has done some great things as a mayor and in her short time as governor, but she continues to beat the war drum without addressing the economy.
I'm really tired of the mudslinging. I can't see that it's accomplished anything in the last eight years except turn people against one another. I admire Obamma for taking the higher road, and it's much more Christlike.
The more I read the more I get angry. Mostly get angry cuz people are actually considering Mcpain and palin...that is scary.
